2023 Trends We Love

Fall is in full swing and there is nothing like the crisp fall air, leaves changing and fashion shifting to cosier clothing. It’s our favourite season and we’d love to share what we’ve been eyeing and swooning over so far this year.

We’d also like to introduce the faces and names behind our design team who steer the direction of our projects behind the scenes, support our clients vision on and off our project sites. We’ve asked each member to weigh in on one trend they are loving right now and here’s our round up to help inspire …

Trend: Coloured Millwork & Dark Cabinetry

There are so many amazing trends for millwork this year that I am loving.  Coloured trim and millwork is a great way to add colour into your space.  Having white walls with a darker coloured trim is a great way to create dimension and interest in a home.  Aside from trim, dark cabinetry is another popular millwork trend this year I’m loving.  Having dark cabinets contracting against a lighter coloured wall creates such a statement.  Having dark cabinetry against a dark coloured walls can also create an interesting moody atmosphere.

Using a different coloured gable against a coloured cabinet is such a fun trend that is a small detail but makes a big impact.  By having a different coloured gable, it helps frame the cabinetry creating an amazing focal point in the space!

Trend: Lime-Washed Walls

Plaster details are a trend that has come back that is truly artistic and it has a subtle and classic appeal to it.  Limewash paints are another trend that again is timeless to me. The chalky texture of limewash paints lends depth and luminosity to flat walls. Also, it improves the air quality of the house as lime’s high pH level means microorganisms can’t survive, which adds a hypoallergenic quality.  Natural stone slabs are something that is becoming popular again such as using countertop material as a backsplash, making the countertop stand out more and making it a focal point.

Trend: Earthy Tones

My favourite trend from this year would have to be earthy tone colours. Earthy tones such as the warm browns, rich terracottas and earthy greens have made quite the resurgence this year and I am here for it.  These colours make a space feel warm and inviting which is something I like to take into consideration when decorating.  This colour palette is quite evident in the mid century modern style, which happens to be my favourite style to decorate in and is quite trendy this year.

An easy way to incorporate this trend into your home is incorporating terracotta vases or serving ware.  I love the pop of colour these accessories bring to a space and the texture of terracotta clay is so beautiful and unique.  What is nice about these colours is that even if you add a small amount to your home, it can create a difference in your spaces by creating comfort and cosiness. You could also make a statement with this trend by painting a feature wall in a muted or saturated green tone, which is something on my bucket list to do!

Trend: Tapered Lighting

Layers of lighting are so important in a space. They allow flexibility to set a mood, help highlight architectural details in a home (or artwork) and can create a statement by adding to your style.

Tapered shades now have modern take on what is known to be a traditional light style. I'm loving this nod to the past but in an updated way that feels liveable and not the slightest bit stuffy. Adding interesting and beautiful lighting along with building layers of lighting throughout a space make it feel luxurious and cozy but done in a laid back way, it feels effortless! You can place it in a modern room or a transitional space and it works in both.
